Our story

At the University of Greenwich, we believe in creating a community that is inclusive, collaborative, and impactful. We’re committed to providing opportunities for everyone to succeed, regardless of their background or circumstances. That's why we're launching this campaign to support refugee students studying at Greenwich.

Refugees face many challenges, financial being only one challenge, when they arrive in the UK. With London being one of the most expensive cities in the world with a high cost of living, this can make it difficult for refugee students to afford the basic necessities they need to succeed in their studies, such as accommodation, food, and transport.

Furthermore, university applicants with asylum-seeker status are legally classed as overseas applicants, this means higher tuition fees and denial of access to financial support from the Student Loan Company.

To help address this issue, we are seeking to raise funds to provide 8 bursaries of £250 for living expenses to refugee students studying at the university.

We believe that education is a powerful tool for change, and we’re committed to ensuring that all our students have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Your support will help us to achieve this goal and make a meaningful difference in the lives of our refugee students.

Please donate today and help us to create a brighter future for refugee students at the University of Greenwich and contribute to a more equitable and just society.

Thank you for your support.

Your donation will help reduce the stigma faced by refugees

As we launch this campaign during Refugee Week, we reflect on this year’s theme – to show compassion and make the UK a more welcoming place.

Due to rising costs and discrimination, refugees can feel like outsiders with nowhere to turn. With the price of food, travel and household bills increasing so much over the past year, students are struggling more than ever and this hits students with refugee status harder.

We understand that due to the stigma associated with being a refugee, many students may not feel comfortable sharing their stories and experiences openly. To address this, we have made it possible to provide anonymous testimonials, should students choose to have their voices heard without fear of discrimination.

Additionally, we are working to reduce the stigma around refugees by organising events such as Refugee Week, which creates a safe and welcoming environment for students to meet others with a shared experience. Through these efforts, we hope to build a more inclusive and collaborative community that values the contributions of all its members.

Though the University of Greenwich do all we can to support our students through advice and guidance, we need your help.

How your donation can help

You will be contributing to a more inclusive and diverse community, where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

Your donation will help to support refugee students:

  • With their increased living expenses – the average weekly cost for a student living in London is around £340. With no support or network, this is more challenging for refugee students.
  • To have an education without boundaries – by alleviating some of the financial pressures they face, they can focus on their studies and succeed academically and achieve their ambitions because of, rather than despite, their backgrounds.
No student should have to worry about financial expenses when studying and experiencing what should be a life-changing university experience.
